Tun Dzaiddin Ethics Award
 
 

Business Ethics Institute of Malaysia [BEIM] presented its inaugural award which was named after Yang Amat Berbahagia Tun Mohamed Dzaiddin Bin Haji Abdullah, Chairman of BEIM's Advisory Council. Tun as we all know, was the former Chief Justice of Malaysia, Chairman of the Royal Commission on the Royal Malaysian Police Force, current Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Berhad and holds a host of other positions. The Award was to recognize individuals who exhibit exemplary commitment and dedication to the cause of good business ethics.

Nominations for this award was proposed exclusively by members of BEIM.

Personalities nominated were based on the following criteria: -
[1] Be a leader in one's field respectively, out ahead of the pack, showing the way ethically.
[2] Must have conducted programs or initiatives in social responsibility that demonstrate sincerity and ongoing vibrancy, and that have significant impact in the corporate world.
[3] Must have a significant presence on the national scene, so that one's ethical behavior sends a loud signal.
[4] Be a stand-out in at least one area of social responsibility, though recipients need not be exemplary in all areas.
[5] Have faced a recent challenge and overcome it with integrity, or taken other steps to exhibit one's commitment is currently active.
[6] Nominees could be personalities from within and outside BEIM including the government and private sectors.
[7] Awardees will be determined by a Selection Panel.

This year, there were ten nominations received and only one was selected to be the inaugural
recipient of the Tun Dzaiddin Ethics Award for 2006. The awardee was YBhg Datuk Dr.
Sulaiman bin Mahbob, Executive Director of the National Economic Action Council and
former President of Malaysian Institute of Integrity [IIM]. The Award was presented by Yang
Amat Berbahagia Tun himself.

Tun Dzaiddin Ethics Award - Datuk Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob
Datuk Dr. Sulaiman Mahbob, an economist, has extensive experience in the area of national economic planning,
public finance, public policies and overall national economic management.

A holder of a Bachelors degree in economics (with honours) from the University of Malaya (1971), Master of Science degree from University of London (1977) and a Ph.D from Syracuse University, USA (1986), he is currently the Executive Director of National Implementation Directorate tasked with the responsibility of the implementation of 9th Malaysia Plan. Prior to this appointment, he served as President of Malaysian Institute of Integrity or IIM, after retiring from the Malaysian Civil Service in July 2004; after having served for more than 33 years.

His previous appointment as the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (2001-2004) also enabled him to serve as Chairman of Companies Commission of Malaysia, and a board member of Malaysian Intellectual Property Corporation.

Whilst serving as an Adjunct Professor (Economics) at University of Malaya and at Universiti Utara Malaysia
(public management and law) and the VP the Malaysian Economic Association, he continued his passion in
writing on economic matters.

His list of professional accolades include his tenure in the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister's Department, the Ministry of Finance as Executive Director of Malaysian Institute of Economic Research (MIER) and
Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Northern University of Malaysia (UUM). However, his stint was interrupted when he was
called to head the Secretariat of National Economic Action Council (NEAC) during the height of the financial crisis in 1998.At NEAC, he successfully led the implementation of recovery measures such as the currency peg and the capital controls.

Most of all, Datuk Dr. Sulaiman championed and promoted business ethics and good governance while he was at the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and spearheaded similar promotion in all government departments while he was heading the Malaysian Institute of Integrity (IIM). Ultimately his noble aim is to encourage the private sector to cultivate good business ethics culture in line with the national aspiration.

For his services, he has been awarded several decorations from the Federal Government (PJN, JSM, KMN) as well as from State governments of Sarawak (DJBS), Johor (SMJ) and Perak (PMP). Sulaiman is married to Datin Dr. Norlaili A.Aziz and they have four children.
